Mentality in Football - What does it even mean?

Mentality in Football - What does it even mean?

Most people don’t realise that you can actively work on your mindset every single day.

There is a big contradiction in football.

Everyone agrees mentality is important.

Yet almost nobody trains it with the same intention they train the technical, physical and tactical parts of the game.

Marcus Rashford recently said he believes 95 percent of football is mentality.
If that is even half true, why do so few players and parents actually work on it?

Today we want to break down what mentality really is, because most people talk about it without ever defining it.

Mentality = Application and Development of Mental Skills

Mental skills are practical tools footballers can use every day.
Examples include:

  • Self talk
  • Visualisation
  • Emotional control
  • Focus and concentration
  • Reset routines
  • Confidence tools
  • Pre match strategies
  • Post match reflection

These are skills. Skills can be learned. Skills can be improved.

But they only work if they are applied consistently, not just when things go wrong.

Mentality is Your Attitude

Attitude is how you show up.

A positive attitude means taking responsibility, preparing properly, learning from mistakes, and staying open minded.

A negative attitude often shows up as excuses, fear of failure, or reacting poorly to feedback.

Your attitude affects your training, your preparation, your relationships with coaches, and your performances.

Most players do not need more talent. Many think that more gym work, more technical work or more 1-1 sessions will make the difference. But without the right attitude and mentality, you will never be close to your full potential.

Mentality is Your Perspective

This might be the most important part of today’s message.

You only know what you know.

Young players see the game from one angle.
Parents see it from another.
Coaches see something different again.

At ProMindset, we never say this is the right way and that is the wrong way.

We give players and parents a different perspective from inside the game.

Because when you change the way you see the challenges in front of you, your decisions, behaviours and confidence change with it.

Perspective shapes everything.

Mentality is Your Processes and Strategies

Strong mentality is not random. It is built.

Players need a mindset plan the same way they need a nutrition plan or training plan. This means:

  • Understanding your strengths and challenges
  • Setting clear intentions
  • Creating routines that support confidence
  • Using specific tools in training and matches
  • Reviewing your week
  • Adjusting and improving

A strong mentality comes from knowing what you will do, why you will do it, and actually doing it.

A massively underrated part of working on your mentality is the instant confidence that comes from realising you have an edge on so many other players. Just by starting, you realise how many footballers and parents are missing out, and you start to feel the benefits straight away.

Most people don’t realise that you can actively work on your mindset every single day.
